“Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and
build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.”
Why SDG 16 Matters in India
Peace, justice, and strong institutions form the backbone of a democratic and equitable society. In India, with its vast population and diversity, achieving SDG 16 means tackling issues like corruption, violence, gender-based crimes, custodial deaths, undertrial delays, and weak citizen participation in governance.
Key challenges in India:
Delays in justice delivery – Over 4.7 crore pending cases in Indian courts
High incidence of crimes against women, children, and marginalized groups
Corruption in public institutions and lack of transparency
Political and electoral violence
Limited access to legal aid in rural and tribal areas
Police brutality and custodial torture
Low trust in public service delivery mechanisms
