Why SDG 8 Matters in India

India’s growth story is impressive, but the challenge is to ensure that economic growth translates into decent jobs for all — especially for the youth, women, and marginalized communities.

Key concerns in the Indian context:

  • Unemployment among youth (ages 15–29) is over 17% (Periodic Labour Force Survey 2023)

  • Over 80% of the workforce is engaged in the informal sector, with no social security

  • Gender gap in workforce participation remains high — only 25% of women are part of the formal workforce

  • Jobless growth and underemployment dominate rural and semi-urban regions

  • Migrant laborers face exploitation, low wages, and lack of workplace dignity

Inclusive and sustainable growth demands a skills revolution, entrepreneurship ecosystem, and a dignified labor environment.
